Taping course ‘Treating without pain’ (2-days)
On Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th of February 2020 the ErgoAcademie will organize a 2-day taping course ‘Treating without pain’ with Allison Taylor (Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) from Sydney University, Australia).
This course is designed for occupational therapist and hand therapists to explore current treatment concepts for the hand and upper extremity, including Kinesio Taping, Mobilization with Motion ‘MWM’, cupping (MFD) and IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization).
The 2-day taping course ‘Treating without pain’ will explore different treatment options for common upper extremity diagnoses. It will teach you how to treat without pain and start to assess the patient from the perspective of the 4 S’s- Skin, Scar, Sensation and Swelling.
Discussion and demonstration of how fascia, muscle imbalance and joint alignment can contribute to pain and ROM, will be integrated throughout the course. Outside the box thinking, including, joint positioning and alignment, Kinesio Taping, and skin and fascial mobilization, will all be demonstrated by Allison Taylor.
There will also be extensive lab time which will allow participants to gain a hands-on knowledge of how these techniques can assist with UE (upper extremity) rehab.
Participants will gain a preliminary knowledge of all the concepts, and how they relate to the practice of Hand Therapy. They will immediately be able to apply these concepts on patients with success.
- Determine how the 4 S’s (Skin, Scar, Sensation and Swelling) contribute to pain in the upper extremity.
- Understanding of how muscle imbalance and alignment can contribute to pain in the upper extremity.
- Utilize manual and soft tissue techniques to improve patient outcomes.
- Understanding the philosophy of and basic concepts of Taping and MWM (Mobilization with Motion).
- Learn basic joint positioning and corrections to reduce pain in common diagnoses.
- Pick up some “ PEARLS” for treating without pain
Alison Taylor graduated as an Occupational Therapist in 1990, from Sydney University, Australia. She has worked in and out of the USA for over 29 years and obtained her CHT (certified hand therapist) in 2001. Since that time Alison has presented at 6 ASHT Conferences, multiple state ASHT and Occupational Therapy conferences, and special interest group meetings in Georgia, Illinois, New Hampshire, Texas and Los Angeles.
She became a Kinesio Taping Instructor in 2011 and actively lectures throughout the USA on UE (upper extremity) and LE (lower extremity) taping. Alison presented on Tennis Elbow at the International Kinesio Taping symposium in Hawaii in 2017, and was published in the Kinesio ‘Advanced Healing Magazine’.
Alison is a guest lecturer for the OT programs at Texas Women’s University (Denton) and LSU (Shreveport), teaching Kinesio Taping and Splinting. She lectures nationally on Hand Therapy and is developing protocols for Tennis Elbow and radial nerve impairment.
Her specialties include hands, upper extremity sports orthopedics and tendonitis. Her background also includes Neurology, geriatrics, Spinal Cord and Acute care.
DAY 1 ‘Treating without Pain’
Including Taping, IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization), Joint Alignment (MWM) and Cupping by Alison Taylor (OTR/L, CHT, CKTI).
8.00-9.15 Review the concepts of Taping, ‘MWM’ and Fascia (Cupping and IASTM)
9.15-10.15 Shoulder Tendonitis and pain…what is going on? Basic assessment of how it relates to the upper extremity.
10.30-12.00 Elbow Tendonitis and Pain…what is going on? Concepts of Muscle Imbalance and Joint Alignment. Linking the elbow to the shoulder and the hand.
13.00-14.15 Wrist Tendonitis and Pain…what is going on? Concepts of Muscle Imbalance and Joint Alignment Anatomy, Restoring Balance, Joint Mobilization Taping – Muscle and Joint
14.15-15.30 Hand and Finger Pain…what is going on? Concepts of Muscle Imbalance and Joint Alignment Anatomy, Restoring Balance, Joint Mobilization Taping – Muscle and Joint
15.45-16.45 Hand and Finger and Thumb Pain continued – ADVANCED Trigger fingers, nerve pain, fractures. Alternative ways to treat pain using vibration, Polly pellets, wedges.
16.45-17.00 ‘Wrap up’ Research Discussion, Summary, Questions
This first day of this combined concepts course will give you new techniques that can be used immediately with multiple ‘take home’ tips and pearls. It will include significant demonstration, lab and video evidence to present the concept of ‘Treating without Pain’. This will include looking closer at the 4 S’s- Skin, Swelling, Scar and Sensation as well as joint alignment and balance. We will explore techniques on how to improve joint ROM, eliminate pain, and eliminate compensation patterns for faster outcomes. Current research will be included to support these concepts.
Day 2 ‘Treating without Pain’
Including Taping, IASTM, and Joint Alignment and Cupping by Alison Taylor (OTR/L, CHT, CKTI).
7.30-8.00 Sign in
8.00-8.45 Review the concepts of Taping, ‘MWM’ (Mobilization with Motion) and Fascia (Cupping and IASTM)
8.45-10.30 Shoulder Tendonitis and pain ……. what is going on? Concepts of Muscle Imbalance and Joint Alignment, Anatomy, Restoring Balance, Taping- Joint Mobilization, Muscle and Joint
10.45-12.00 Elbow Tendonitis and pain……… what is going on? Concepts of Muscle Imbalance and Joint Alignment, Anatomy, Restoring Balance, Joint Mobilization, Taping- Muscle and Joint
13.00- 14.30 Wrist Tendonitis and pain ………….what is going on? Concepts of Muscle Imbalance and Joint Alignment, Anatomy, Restoring Balance, Joint Mobilization, Taping- Muscle and Joint
14.30-15.15 Hand and Finger Pain ………………..what is going on? Concepts of Muscle Imbalance and Joint Alignment, Anatomy, Restoring Balance, Joint Mobilization,Taping- Muscle and Joint
15.30-16.30 Hand and Finger and Thumb Pain continued……….Trigger fingers, Nerve pain. Alternative ways to treat pain using vibration, Polly pellets, wedges
16.30-17.00 ‘Wrap up’ – Research Discussion, Summary, Questions
This is day 2 of the combined concepts course, that will give you new techniques that can be used to treat pain conditions in the upper extremity. It will include significant demonstration, lab and video evidence to present the concepts of muscle imbalance and alignment, and how it relates to tendonitis.
We will focus on the major pain sites in the UE (upper extremity) and look at alternative ways to understand and treat these locations. The whole sensory system will be included, and 6 physiological systems will be addressed to help restore balance to the upper extremity. Joint mobilization and taping applications will clearly demonstrate muscle imbalance and current research will be included to support these concepts.
The concepts of Cupping (MFD), IASTM, MWM and Taping will be integrated through the day.
